Mallikarjun Kharge – presently the federal labor and employment minister in the Cabinet, was reassigned the coveted railway portfolio in Monday’s cabinet reshuffle. A member of Lok Sabha, India’s lower house of Parliament, from Karnataka, 72-year-old Mr. Kharge has served as the head of Congress party’s affairs from 2005 for four years. Before that, he also held several portfolios in the state cabinet including education, rural development and revenue. Mr. Kharge is considered as having a clean political image among party members. His appointment as the railway minister comes after Pawan Kumar Bansal resigned from the post after his nephew, Vijay Singla, was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation for allegedly accepting a bribe to ensure the promotion of a railway official. Mr. Bansal and his nephew deny wrongdoing.
Sis Ram Ola – A member of the Lok Sabha, Mr. Ola was named as the new federal labor and employment minister. The 85-year-old Congress politician has previously held the labor and mines portfolios in Prime Minister Singh’s cabinet. He has been credited for starting girls education in a remote areas of Rajasthan and in 1968 was conferred the Padma Shri, an Indian award given to people who have performed exceptionally well in any field.
Oscar Fernandes – Oscar Fernandes, a Congress party veteran, was appointed as the federal roads and highways minister after his predecessor C.P. Joshi resigned the post over the weekend. A member of Rajya Sabha, India’s upper house of Parliament from southern state of Karnataka, Mr. Fernandes, 72-year-old has previously held several ministerial positions including sports, labor and employment and overseas affairs between 2004 and 2009. He was replaced as the Congress party’s general secretary Sunday to allow him to take up the new role.
Girija Vyas – A member of Lok Sabha from Rajasthan, was given the housing, urban development and poverty alleviation portfolio. She served as junior information and broadcasting minister during the early 1990s and in 2005 was appointed as the head of the National Commission for Women, a constitutional body, a position she held for six years. A “prolific writer” of Urdu poems and Hindi articles on social issues, Ms. Vyas, 66 years, has written around 50 articles in local and international journals, according to information on her official website.
K. Sambasiva Rao – has been appointed as the federal textiles minister. A 69-year-old Lok Sabha member from southern state of Andhra Pradesh, Mr. Rao has earlier been a member of several government committees from finance, roads and highways to petroleum and natural gas and energy. He was also previously engaged in the construction of major irrigation and power projects and housing complexes.
Manik Rao Gavit – The 78-year-old Congress politician was given the role of junior minister for social justice and empowerment. A tribal leader and member of Lok Sabha from the western state of Maharashtra, Mr. Gavit became junior home minister in 2004 and continued in office for four years. In 2009, Mr. Gavit was appointed as pro-temporary speaker by India’s former president Pratibha Devisingh Patil
Santosh Chowdhary – The Congress party’s lawmaker from the northern state of Punjab, 68-year-old Ms. Chowdhary, was appointed as the junior minister for health and family welfare. She has previously been a member of various government committees including railways, welfare of backward classes and women empowerment. “Reading, meeting people of her constituency and helping the poor” are some of Ms. Chowdhary’s interests, according to her official website.
J. D. Seelam - A Rajya Sabha member from Andhra Pradesh, 59-year-old Mr. Seelam, was assigned the office of junior finance minister. Believed party members to be a loyalist of the Gandhi family, Mr. Seelam has served in various committees as a member of parliament such as those on water resources, social justice and empowerment and committee on the welfare of scheduled castes and scheduled tribes.
E. M. S. Natchiappan – was appointed as the junior minister for commerce and industry in the new cabinet. The 65-year-old is a member of Rajya Sabha from the southern state of Tamil Nadu and heads the parliamentary forum on human rights for global development. A lawyer at India’s Supreme Court, Mr. Natchiappan has interests in activities related to education and human resource development, agriculture and international affairs. Widely-traveled, Mr. Natchiappan is a prolific writer. He addressed the United Nations General Assembly twice in 2008.
